Meaning_Making
Meaning_Making, a series of videos I found discusses the Graphic Design Thesis II work done by University of New York (I think I’ve linked to the right department there) students Michael Mallon, Joseph Mazzaro, Patrick Walsh and Melissa Washin. It’s asks questions about ideas, process, execution, etc. You might find the videos a little pretentious or slow at times, but what the students are saying is very interesting, and a lot of the work shown is fantastic. One piece that caught my attention in the 2nd video is the stenciled statistic on the recycling bin “a plastic milk jug takes 1,000,000 years to decompose” - seems like the perfect place to educate people on that issue! If you’ve got the time, go check them out. Here’s a link to each specific one (but watch them in order): 1 2 3 4 5
Hey there. I’m flattered this made it to the site.
We all worked together (our thesis class, that is) under the umbrella topic of “sustainability” our first semester, putting together a book entitled That is Not Natural. The experience served to help us better understand our responsibilities and potential functions as designers, while bringing us together as a team.
This led us into out second semester, in which we were each given the opportunity to develop and study our own interests independently while reporting to each other every week. What you see here is a result of this.
It was brought to the attention of Mike, Pat, Melissa and I that although our work was clearly very different and led us all in entirely new directions, there was a common thread which ran through all of it. And so we presented together at Omnibus ‘08, our department’s final public lecture. It was a great experience and something I’m very thankful for.
Certainly we’re all still a bit green and had little know-how when it came to being in front of and behind a video camera, but I hope this doesn’t take away TOO much from our individual analyses, which I take a lot of pride in.
I really do appreciate anyone taking the time to check this out. And if there are any questions about the projects or the department, I’m sure that I can refer you to whoever you like. We’re all very friendly and gracious for the opportunity to network and help out our fellow designers.
