James - I do have the person's name and website, but I try not to advertise any non-student work/companies here.

As for what he said - I'm finding more and more in the city I live (medium sized), the majority of design work follows exactly what he said: the idea of "how". There is lots of photoshop work - bad photoshop work, but people who at least know how to use the necessary programs. It's the content and depth of the designs. Everything is made to look flashy with only one intention: to get peoples' attention. That's the extent of research and concepts. This isn't why brochures, signs, and labels are designed. Sure they should grab the attention, but their NUMBER ONE purpose is to inform and convince.

I agree Nicole. Though I am finding it hard to do that now - I have a summer job working as a designer, and am often, for lack of a better word, "bullied" around by the people at the top. It is hard to sell your ideas, especially being a student. But Massimo Vignelli did once say (I'm paraphrasing here) it doesn't matter how stupid you or your clients are - once it's printed, excuses don't matter.

Do you have a copy of the cover you're talking about?

The same reason as professional newspapers... too much "supervision" from supervisors/teachers.

I was an editor for my paper way back and once had a student design an amazing cover. He was a volunteer and spent more than 20 hours on it.

Our supervisor came at the last minute, looked at the cover and proceeded to butcher the entire design. She kept telling the designer, cut this and that, add this or that and the cover ended up being worse than the initial design.

I wish I stood up for him but alas didn't have the guts back then.

One thing I learned though is to never ever compromise. If you do, you end up with something you wish never went to print.

I just canceled my applied arts subscription as i'm tired of the bad experiences i've had dealing with them AND i have no idea why it's "the" Canadian design mag.
Is it the only Canadian design magazine?

Overall, i don't like the layout and design. It just ain't good!
And in the last issue, i think it was a profile on the Quebec illustration scene, the images were even low res!

BUT! For all the students out there - Applied Arts offers a discount to students - it's like $35 or something like that for a years' subscription. I wish I was still a student so I could get it at that rate! :)

Hey there. I'm flattered this made it to the site.

We all worked together (our thesis class, that is) under the umbrella topic of "sustainability" our first semester, putting together a book entitled That is Not Natural. The experience served to help us better understand our responsibilities and potential functions as designers, while bringing us together as a team.
This led us into out second semester, in which we were each given the opportunity to develop and study our own interests independently while reporting to each other every week. What you see here is a result of this.
It was brought to the attention of Mike, Pat, Melissa and I that although our work was clearly very different and led us all in entirely new directions, there was a common thread which ran through all of it. And so we presented together at Omnibus '08, our department's final public lecture. It was a great experience and something I'm very thankful for.
Certainly we're all still a bit green and had little know-how when it came to being in front of and behind a video camera, but I hope this doesn't take away TOO much from our individual analyses, which I take a lot of pride in.
I really do appreciate anyone taking the time to check this out. And if there are any questions about the projects or the department, I'm sure that I can refer you to whoever you like. We're all very friendly and gracious for the opportunity to network and help out our fellow designers.
